Who Doesn’t Love a Good Before and After?

This recent Westfield home renovation project is a great example of how you can take an existing house and transform it to suit your family’s needs. The 1970s ranch sat on the perfect location – a big, flat piece of land, fenced in for privacy and minutes from major transportation, shopping and schools. But walk through the front door, and you were instantly overwhelmed by outdated lighting, outdated wallpaper, crumby old carpets and closed off spaces.

The house was begging to be brought back to life, so we came up with a budget, came up with a plan, and got right to work. The entire gut renovation took just 90 days to complete – start to finish.

Bringing the Exterior of the House Back to Life

We gave the exterior a good re-landscaping – removing scraggly old bushes and dangerously tall trees. We added all new Hardie and AZEK siding in a soft grayish blue. To create a nice welcome, we built a covered front porch and gave it a beautiful entry light pendant. We also replaced the front door with a craftsman-style wood front door for more curb appeal. 


Making the Interior More Modern and Welcoming


Inside, we basically tore everything down and started from scratch, giving the house a more family-friendly, open floor plan, and a more modern feel. In the foyer, we took down the 1970s wallpaper and removed the old carpeting, the oak banister, the multi-colored slate floor and the old brass light fixture. With new wood floors (throughout the house), a fresh coat of paint, a modern light fixture and some gorgeous wrought iron railings, the entry way is now much more open and welcoming.


We put a lot of love into the kitchen as well, removing old, dark wood cabinets, the old Formica countertop/backsplash combo, dated white appliances and an older tile floor. It was just not a place where you’d want to spend any amount of time cooking family meals. So, we lightened up the whole space with white ceiling-height cabinets, white countertops and a clean, white backsplash.

The cabinetry framework lends a distinct, traditional look to keep the design from feeling too modern (which can get a little cold). For contrast and depth, we chose a dark charcoal color for the base of the island, dark cabinet hardware, and a couple of well-placed iron globe pendants. And of course, we finished the kitchen off with some brand-new stainless-steel appliances. The end result is stunning – clean, open, and modern. Now it’s a welcome gathering place for friends and family.



The same wood floors and fresh, clean paint carry over into family room and dining room. We removed heavily-grained, medium-colored oak paneling from the walls of the family room and dated wallpaper from the dining room walls. Out came the old carpeting, dated drapery and old-fashioned lighting. We opened everything up, installed brand-new drywall and pocket lights, and gave the fireplace in the family room a modern makeover with beautiful stone and an energy-efficient gas insert. 
 


There was more old wallpaper to tear out in the bathrooms, along with outdated vanities, faucets and fixtures, and yes, even a pink toilet.

We updated all 3 bathrooms with new, modern tile, glass shower doors, beautiful new fixtures, and new, modern hardware. In the master bathroom, the hexagon-shaped marble tiles give the shower a truly luxurious feeling.

The backyard was overgrown and out-of-date. Now, new slider doors lead to a brand-new deck, which leads down to a new paver stone patio and new landscaping. The overall look is much cleaner and more modern – a much more inviting space for a family BBQ or relaxing with friends.
