For a family home that is simple but stately, look no further than classic farmhouse style.

A farmhouse-style home is rooted in nostalgia and traditional values, making it the type of cozy space you want to come home to after a long day of work.

Perhaps best of all, building in this style creates an inherently functional space with maximum durability that still has plenty of opportunity for elegant detail.

To demonstrate some of the best features of this style, let’s focus on five elements of this gorgeous new custom build at 333 Carolina Street in Clark, NJ.

1. Farmhouse Style: A Warm Front Porch

A classic component of any farmhouse is a covered front porch.

The porch serves as a bridge between outside and inside, creating a welcoming transition from a hard day in the field (or just the office) to a relaxing home space.

This porch was built with durable blue stone for a touch of calming color. At its center, you’ll find a custom front door with separated transom windows, allowing natural light to stream in.

2. Farmhouse Style: Dressed to Impress

For a typical farmhouse, the front of the house is designed in a more formal style meant for entertaining.

In this home, guests entering the foyer are immediately awed by the striking herringbone patterned red oak floor.

They’ll also notice the exquisite millwork which creates an elegant and unified look throughout the first floor and up the stairs into the second floor.

This foyer transitions into a dramatic dining room with black wainscot paneled walls and a stunning gold wagon wheel chandelier.

3. Farmhouse Style: Functional Family Spaces at the Heart of the Home

An important tenet of farmhouse style is that the formal entertaining spaces in the front of the home give way to practical family spaces in the heart of the home.

Naturally, that means a large and well-appointed kitchen.

For this kitchen build, we carried over the dramatic black paneling from the dining room but kept the space warm and airy with open shelving and white stone countertops.

A generously sized kitchen island at the center is perfect to gather around.

Preparing meals is a breeze, with a large pantry and ceiling-high cabinets providing ample storage space, not to mention the Jenn Air stainless steel appliances, which include a wall oven and 36” professional range.

The kitchen opens into a snug but stately family room. An ornate black accent wall with diagonal millwork surrounds a gas fireplace framed by cultured stone and a custom mantle.

A farmhouse-style home may elicit nostalgia but there’s no reason to give up modern conveniences.

This room has a pre-wired surround sound system so family movie night is cued up and ready to go.

4. Farmhouse Style: Practical Design for Everyday Comfort

We put thought into every detail, making sure everything was in its proper place for day to day functionality.

The two-car garage with carriage style doors opens into a mudroom with cabinets and bench seating.

The laundry room is located on the second floor, along with the master suite, two bedrooms, and an office.

All bedrooms have custom closets for maximum storage and convenience.

The finished basement contains an office, full bathroom, countertop, and refrigerator but is otherwise open and flexible to take on the role of a playroom, rec room, or guest bedroom as needed.

5. Farmhouse Style: Timeless and Built to Last

Just as farmhouse style has stood the test of time, this home contains all of the practical features required to stand up to the wear and tear of life, including:

  • Maintenance-free exterior with Hardie Board and Batten strips in the front and Hardie Cedarmill Siding on the left, right and rear sides
